OpenAI has introduced a new flagship AI model, o3 Pro, designed to offer more reliable performance in areas where accuracy and depth of reasoning matter most. Replacing the previous o1 Pro within ChatGPT, the new model uses more computational power to “think harder”—a tradeoff that brings more thoughtful responses but at the cost of longer wait times.
Positioned as the most capable reasoning model OpenAI has released to date, o3 Pro shows consistent improvements across a range of tasks, especially in math, science, programming, education, and writing support. Internal evaluations at OpenAI indicate that users consistently prefer o3 Pro’s output when compared to the standard o3 model, especially for clarity, thoroughness, and adherence to instructions.
One of the standout features of o3 Pro is its integrated toolset. The model can perform web searches, analyze files, interpret images, execute Python code, and draw on personalized memory—all based on the user’s prompt. This tool-calling capability was missing in o1 Pro, making o3 Pro a significantly more versatile option for power users and professionals.
However, the added functionality comes with limitations. Users should expect slower response times due to the model’s increased computational demands. OpenAI is positioning o3 Pro for scenarios where accuracy, rather than speed, is the priority—making it more suitable for detailed research, technical troubleshooting, or content generation that requires high factual precision.
The model is currently available to ChatGPT Pro and Team users through the model selector. Enterprise and EDU customers will gain access next week. Developers can also access o3 Pro via API with a generous 200,000-token context window. Pricing is set at $20 per million input tokens and $80 per million output tokens. Due to processing demands, OpenAI recommends using o3 Pro in background mode to reduce the risk of timeouts.
There are still some known issues. Temporary chats have been disabled due to a technical bug, and the model currently lacks support for image generation, canvas features, and some other interactive elements. Users seeking image outputs should continue using GPT-4o or the lighter o4-mini model instead.
With a knowledge cutoff of May 31, 2024, o3 Pro brings a recent understanding of the world, though not real-time data. This makes it highly functional for complex reasoning and decision-making but not for breaking news or live events.
The release of o3 Pro reflects OpenAI’s evolving strategy to segment its offerings by use case—balancing speed, power, and capability across different models. As generative AI continues to become more task-specific, o3 Pro represents a shift toward specialization over general-purpose convenience. It’s not the fastest, but for users seeking dependable, thoughtful outputs in high-stakes contexts, it may be the most capable option OpenAI currently offers.
